SAVANNAH ON MY MIND…..Senator’s Gate……low country boil…..Oglethorpe’s garden squares…..Little Tybee Unplugged….. A-J’s…..Beaufort and the Big Chill…..Reunion 2019.

Senator’s Gate opened up an architectural masterpiece of the 1800s for the ten of us.  We marveled at the high ceilings, crystal chandeliers, massive moldings, and multiple fireplaces.  Marble baths, large dining room, and a dream kitchen not only were beautiful but also functional.  The wonderful house though may have spoiled us for anything less in the future.

Seafood seemed to be the order of every day.  We had low country boil delivered to the house, crab cakes and soft shell crabs at Vic’s, fried oysters and deviled crab at crazy A-J’s, and crab BLTs and more fried oysters at Plum’s.  Lucky Louise and Tina even managed to eat lunch at the coveted Colin’s Quarter.

Friday was a day for enjoying the charms of Savannah.  We walked along Bull St to the riverfront, enjoying the beautiful garden squares with their massive moss-draped oaks along the way.  Before lunch at waterfront Vic’s, some chose to ride the riverboat while others shopped.  We straggled back to the house in small groups with one contingent confusing Hull St with our house on Hall St and resulting in a back and forth walk-a-thon.  Evenings at the house were devoted to visiting, recounting, and laughing!

The beautiful, desolate beach

Saturday afternoon we chartered two boats with Sundial for a trip called Little Tybee Unplugged which focused on the marshes and barrier islands.  Five of us went on the boat with slow-moving-never-stopped-talking Dave.  The other five went with speedy-ass-get-soaked Rene.  Either way we saw a pristine landscape of narrow waterways cutting through marsh grasses, learning along the way about tides, birds, and flora.  The destination was a sand spit on a barrier island separating the Atlantic Ocean from the marshes.  Walking around the tip of the spit revealed a bird heaven with hundreds of pelicans, seagulls, sandpipers, and more.  Somehow it felt invasive but was a wonder to see.  Several dolphins escorted us back to the dock with one putting on a special show for Dixie.  Our excursion ended at A-J’s restaurant, an aquamarine and pink falling-down wooden structure on the water.  Much confusion ensued over the mysterious table 80 and the missing seashell:). Please note our group “Edith Ann” photo:)

Sunday most of us went to Beaufort.  One carload ooohed and aaahed and gasped on seeing the historical area and even talked about a reunion there.  However, when the enamored group talked to the other carload, there apparently was no oooing or aaaing.  What the?  Two of us stayed in Savannah and attended an inspirational service at the gorgeous cathedral.

Our 2019 reunion cup overflowed with friendship and fun.  We all went home with “SAVANNAH ON MY MIND”.

Thanks, Betty, for the Savannah highlights and lowlights!
